My parents are Kelantanese born. They lived in Tumpat, where Thai influence is prevalent, even both my Chinese grandparents and their relatives conversed purely in Thai. My parents are now in their 60's who have been living in Penang for over 30 years.

In their younger days, khao jam is sold by a vendor or two as a substitute for nasi lauk to the Chinese during the fasting month. Khao jam was also prepared during festivals at Thai temples. But now it is available daily as it is gaining popularity due to a growing trend of healthy eating.
Tumpat
After moving to Penang, my parents realised that Khao Jam was not available in Penang. My mother decided to cook khao jam with any local herbs she could find and she has been making it ever since. Now. we want to share this amazing dish with Penangites.
